Durante una conversación con la junta de la embajada de los EE.UU. en Addis Abeba, Ethiopía, en la primera parada de su viaje a África, el Secretario de Estado John Kerry resaltó lo que él llamó “diferentes contracorrientes de modernidad” y los retos que ellos presentan para el continente africano. Los comentarios contienen una velada referencia a la religión, y la parte que la religión podría estar jugando en algunos de los actuales conflictos en África:

Las palabras “algo que fue escrito hace más de mil, dos mil años” parecen ser una referencia a la Biblia, o al Korán, o quizás a ambos. Más de un conflicto en Áfrca hoy tiene conexiones religiosas implícitas o explícitas…

La oficina de prensa del Departamento de Estado declinó analizar las anotaciones de Kerry, y en su lugar se refirió a preguntas sobre la fiesta de viaje de los acompañantes del secretario en su viaje a África.
